As an experienced Camera System Engineer within our team, you will collaborate with a skilled and accomplished cross-disciplinary staff and internal and external stakeholders to drive key aspects of technology solution definition, execution and validation.
Full cycle product development experience from inception through maturity is important. Working simultaneously on projects in different phases is common; you are able to demonstrate strong design and validation skills in addition to the understanding of mechanics of ongoing operational excellence and product support. You are responsive, flexible, and able to succeed within an open collaborative peer environment.
The Role: Everyone on the team needs to be entrepreneurial, wear many hats and work in a highly collaborative environment that's more startup than a big company. We will need to tackle problems that span a variety of domains: computer vision, image recognition, machine learning, real-time and distributed systems.
You will tackle challenging, novel situations every day and, given the size of this initiative, you will have the opportunity to work with multiple technical teams at Amazon in different locations. You should be comfortable with a high degree of ambiguity and relish the idea of solving problems that haven't been solved at scale before. A day in the life
You will specify several aspects of the system:
* Optical: field of view, dynamic range, resolution, video encoding, auto-exposure, image stabilization, auto white balance, and auto-focus.
* Mechanical: mounting and environmental fitness
* Electrical/interface: power, bandwidth, and encoding
* Software: compatibility with AWS Data Stream Processing, video decoding, device health monitoring and remote maintenance
* Financial: unit, Non-Recurring-Expenses, connectivity, data streaming and processing, and field replacements and decommissioning at statistically predicted rates
* Application: reliability, security, safety and EMC compliance
* Camera care and feeding: site requirements, installation, operational metrics, troubleshooting, replacement, and decommissioning.
You will write and present recommendations, experiment outcomes to Director level leadership.
About the team
The Just Walk Out hardware team (Argon) develops the hardware and firmware that enable our sensor, vision, and RF solutions that enable the frictionless shopping experience in our cashierless stores. We are a group of many engineering disciplines, all working together closely to ideate, prototype, mature, and launch into high volume production custom hardware products.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- BS EE or CS, Physics, Image Science, Electrical Engineering or related experience.
- 5 years of work experience with camera system development, validation, and deployment.
- Experience in imaging optics, camera modules, lens design and illumination design.
- Experience with image pipeline in still and video cameras, including selection and specification of video encoding / decoding algorithms.
- Clear and concise documentation and communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- MS or PhD, EE or CS, Optics, Physics, Image Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
- Experience with other related consumer imaging devices. High definition video experiences. Experiences in webcam, DSC, camera modules, surveillance camera, sport camera, 3D depth sensing technologies.
- Experience with multi-camera calibration methodology
- Experience in design and implementation knowledge of imaging control algorithms such as AE/AWB/AF/face tracking
- Knowledge in both sequential and non-sequential optics design tool (Zemax, Code V, LightTool, FRED and/or ASAP)
- Experience with AWS services like Kinesis or Rekognition
- Experience with network security, wired and wireless network design and implementation

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $235,200/year in our highest geographic market.
