We are seeking a highly skilled weather scientist to help invent and develop new models and strategies to support Prime Air’s drone delivery program. In this role, you will develop, build, and implement novel weather solutions using your expertise in atmospheric science, data science, and software development. You will be supported by a team of world class software engineers, systems engineers, and other scientists. Your work will drive cross-functional decision-making through your excellent oral and written communication skills, define system architecture and requirements, enable the scaling of Prime Air’s operation, and produce innovative technological breakthroughs that unlock opportunities to meet our customers' evolving demands.


About the team
Prime air has ambitious goals to offer its service to an increasing number of customers. Enabling a lot of concurrent flights over many different locations is central to reaching more customers. To this end, the weather team is building algorithms, tools and services for the safe and efficient operation of prime air's autonomous drone fleet.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- PhD, or Master's degree and 5+ years of applied research experience
- Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
- 3+ years of building machine learning models for business application experience
- Experience building weather solutions with weather data, data science and machine learning.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Degree in atmospheric science or equivalent
- Expertise in weather modeling, weather forecasting, weather observation, mesoscale and boundary layer meteorology
- Experience leading high impact weather research projects
- Demonstrable experience developing, building, and implementing machine learning and/or statistical models into production systems on cloud platforms like AWS
- Experience in professional software development writing clean, testable, performant, and elegant code
- Familiarity with a wide variety of weather data from various weather model and weather analysis products
- An understanding of turbulence theory, large eddy simulations, and computational fluid dynamics models
- Experience in gathering requirements through effective communication with end users, business teams, and management
- Author of high impact publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals, or patents

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $150,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $260,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
