At Amazon Advertising, we are developing state-of-the-art large-scale computational advertising and real-time application. The Bidding Science and Experimentation team develops algorithms and high performance, large-scale distributed systems to optimize ad selection, bidding and campaign performance. Our systems process billions of ad impressions daily from across the internet to power our Display and Video advertising algorithms. Our teams work with scientists, economists, and product managers on high impact initiatives for Amazon Advertising.

We are looking for a Software Development Manager to lead our engineering efforts across a broad range of machine learning and optimization initiatives. As a Software Development Manager (SDM), you will own and deliver on business goals working cross-functionally to create alignment and deliver results. You will lead design discussions, drive long-term investment in the right technologies for the business, and bring appropriate rigor to solving complex technical problems. As a people leader, you will build and lead the team, manage performance, and shepherd the careers of your direct reports. Your excellent communication skills will be used to sharpen technical ideas, establish clear priorities, and drive high quality work under aggressive timelines.

Success in this role requires:

* A leader experienced in establishing and building relationships with a wide range of peers, including senior Ads executives, customers at all levels of experience and responsibility.
* You are a leader with proven skills to easily switch between weighing in on complex engineering details, taking a long term view of the business, growing and developing the next generation of DSP and overall operating as a large-scale organization leader. It requires an ability to prioritize work for the direct team and partner teams, establish goals, and focus attention on the most important inputs to drive the desired business outcomes.
* You are a leader capable of scaling themselves and their team to meet the ever-increasing demands of a fast-growing business. You’ll need to excel at hiring and developing your technical talent.
* You will lead the team’s technical strategy by making insightful contributions to priorities and approach, set the standard for engineering excellence, and take the lead in identifying and solving ambiguous technical problems or architecture deficiencies.
* You are passionate about building a high performing engineering team and will have a track record of delivering technology roadmaps in a high growth environment where priorities may shift quickly.
* You should have an exceptional ability to prioritize, communicate clearly and compellingly, and understand how to drive a high level of focus and excellence with a strong team.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
