Key job responsibilities
We are looking for a technical leader for a talented team of software engineers that gets excited about building and running distributed services at massive scale and high availability. You will be partnering with EC2 product managers and senior engineering leaders to plan, design and build the service software and deliver on high-impact customer features. You will also be enforcing Operational Excellence within your team and look for ways to operate the service efficiently.
A day in the life
As an SDM on the EC2 Spot team, you will be working closely with product managers across teams to come up with solutions for growing the business and addressing customer asks. You will be coaching engineers at various levels of experience and guide them in their career goals while delivering on the business roadmap.
You will also be managing multiple projects, communicating with senior leadership on regular basis to influence the success for the service.
About the team
EC2 Spot owns the management of Spot Instances, which make unused EC2 capacity available to customers at deeply discounted price. This is a strategic price discrimination offering of EC2 to grow AWS business. The team owns APIs and workflows to launch Spot instances, manage unused capacity, run dynamic pricing and prediction algorithms. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
