The Alexa Business Telemetry & Decision Science team (B-Tel for short) builds telemetry to report and analyze how customers engage with Alexa and how engagement translates to value for the business. Our products include metrics definition and instrumentation, data products consumed by Alexa BI and analytics teams, and models that predict trends and identify drivers of business outcomes. This BI Engineer will help us understand customer behavior by designing new models to connect separate data, analyzing trends and anomalies for actionable insights, and reporting metrics needed for decision-making.

If you want to be at the forefront of thinking holistically about Alexa customer engagement and how it drives long-term value for Amazon, this is the role for you.

Key job responsibilities
This role provides an opportunity to work with many internal business customers in a fast-paced
environment, understanding and defining the relationships between business metrics.

Specific responsibilities include:
• Develop data visualizations & dashboard designs that raise the bar and meet a wide range of customer needs
• Work cross-functionally with product managers, scientists, and engineers to design the ETL pipelines underlying our products
• Dive deep into varied data sources to understand the relationships between metrics, surface insights, and implement new data models to make analysis scalable and repeatable
• Use statistical models and machine learning solutions with large, multidimensional datasets to uncover trends, patterns, and opportunities
• Identify and recommend opportunities to automate processes
• Perform ad hoc analysis to quickly solve time sensitive operational issues and business cases
• Clearly communicate discrepancies and downtime, including specific root cause, steps to resolve, and ETA to a large user base

A day in the life
In a typical day, an Alexa B-Tel BI Engineer might work to establish new metrics for an Alexa problem space, like segmenting customers by lifecycle stages, measuring subscription funnel conversions, or tracking engagement by Prime subscribers. The BIE would understand stakeholders' business requirements and document in a BRD, explore data sources and validate accuracy and SLA performance, prototype a solution for technical review by fellow BIEs and DEs, and implement ETL pipelines to produce data for vending across Alexa.

Another typical project might be analyzing an anomaly in engagement metrics to determine whether the business should take action, or whether we might improve our metrics definitions or operations. The BIE would work independently to root cause the anomaly, understand business implications, and recommend a course of action through a crisp document for senior managers and directors.
