Job Description:
Amazon is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Electrical Engineer to join our battery development and test team within Project Kuiper, which seeks to build and deploy a satellite constellation to provide internet access for unserved and underserved populations. In this position you will lead the design, testing and validation of advanced battery test systems that are used in verification and production testing of satellite battery systems. This role involves designing, building and executing comprehensive battery test setups, including battery cyclers and emulators. The ideal candidate will be a technical expert in electrical circuit design, component selection, system integration and ensuring that our battery systems meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and reliability.


Key job responsibilities
• Lead the design, selection and development of battery cycler and emulator test systems for space applications.
• Size electrical components such as power supplies, current sensors, harnesses, gauges and other critical battery-related hardware.
• Collaborate on the design of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA) for Li-ion battery applications including electrical drawings, design review and verification processes.
• Design and build custom test systems to execute electrical tests on battery systems and components such as PCBA, thermistors, heaters etc.
• Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis of battery systems failures and provide solutions for redesign or system improvements.
• Define project scope and milestones in order to deliver next generation test systems and PCBA.
• Collaborate with Engineering to optimize products through review and approve qualification documents such as DFMEAs, PFMEAs, etc.
• Validate design through prototype builds, pre-production builds and first-of-kind builds, conducting value engineering analysis through each step and updating design and documentation.
• Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and internal quality controls to maintain highest levels of safety and performance.
• Provide guidance and technical expertise to junior engineers involved in the battery development process and its testing systems.

Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in battery system design, including cycler and emulator development, power supply selections, and component sizing.
- Strong experience in PCBA design and electrical testing, specifically within battery or power system environments.
- Proven expertise in custom test setup development, including thermistor, heater, and short-circuit testing etc.
- Hands-on experience with electrical testing equipment and methodologies.
- Proficiency in schematic design, electrical drawings, and system-level verification processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Familiarity with testing protocols and industry best practices.
- Experience with automation and data acquisition systems for battery testing.
- Strong Python coding.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
- Experience with aerospace, automotive, or other high-reliability battery systems.
- Familiarity with industry standards for battery testing and safety (e.g., UN, IEC, UL, SAE).
- Expertise in battery safety testing, thermal management and failure analysis.
- Familiarity with satellite or aerospace battery systems is a plus.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $128,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
