This team will be focused on Flex DP verification through automation and tooling, supporting manual review processes for DP identity and other documents. This is a newly formed team combining scope and charter from a few different teams to increase our investment in this important space. The Software Development Manager in this role will need to help define the team charter and vision while inspiring others.
As a Software Development Manager within this space, you will play an important role in protecting Amazon Customers by ensuring the identity and documents of Flex DPs are fully validated before they can go on road delivering packages. You will manage your team's roadmap while orchestrating the design, development, testing, deployment and operations of multiple backend services and tools used by quality operations teams. You will work with partner tech teams to define team boundaries for this new team. In some cases, you will facilitate discussions to decide where one piece of software should be deprecated in favor of increased investment in another one.
To be successful in this position, you will need to be a hands-on technical manager who understands and sets a high bar for all parts of the software development and deployment life-cycle. You will need to simultaneously deliver features for customers while ensuring progress on the right architectural vision.
A successful manager in this space will bring knowledge around the importance of test automation, and encourage a culture of curiosity and learning within the team.

A successful candidate will be responsible for the end to end ownership of a technology team and its direct service dependencies, and setting the technical vision for developing our systems to serve our customer’s needs. The candidate will have proven ability to hire and develop a diverse software engineering team that is customer-focused, team oriented, and have the ability to work independently under time constraints to meet deadlines. We aim to create a highly technical and entrepreneurial culture and you will help us foster that. The candidate will show strong business and technical judgment that will accelerate time to market of releases, while incrementally moving our services towards the north star vision.
A day in the life
You might start your day by having a 1:1 with one of your team members. They've been doing a great job on their recent project, and you want to give them some positive feedback and discuss how they've been progressing on their career goals.
Next you're off to a technical design review meeting setup by a partner team. The teams are working together to launch a critical feature, and the group will be reviewing the integration pieces of the design today.
After that, it's the daily standup meeting. One of your team's SDEs is blocked waiting on some UX mockups, and so you follow-up offline to make sure they get unblocked.
Next, you spend some time working on the upcoming year's operational plan document. There are some opportunities you've noticed to improve the system, and you want to write them down to get buy-in from the team's stakeholders and leadership.
After that, you spend a little bit of time looking at the tickets the team received this week. You notice a trend of new tickets related to a service which recently had a rollout, and you make a note to ask about it in the next weekly team Operational Excellence review.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
- Experience in many disparate technologies, typically ranging from front-end user interfaces through to back-end systems and all points in between

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market.
