At Amazon, we're working to be the most customer-centric company on earth. To get there, we need exceptionally talented, bright, innovative and driven leaders.

The Amazon Extra Large (AMXL) Long-Term Planning team is looking for a Design Engineer Manager to lead the AMXL Engineering team.

The Sr. Design Engineer is responsible for designing, managing and executing the next generation of XL building designs, processes, equipment, and operations. This is a unique opportunity to own new innovation projects that will advance our heavy/bulky business.

We are looking for a passionate hands-on leader with technical analysis experience, with strong background in warehouse design and/or equivalent in manufacturing, production or distribution environments who can effectively innovate on behalf of the customer in a fast-paced environment. In this role, you will collaborate with internal and external teams to design high quality, cost effective solutions for our fulfillment and distribution systems. You will own multiple projects simultaneously, from concept to execution. You will be our technical single threaded leader overseeing the end-to-end process making sure the designs achieve the desired outcome. You’ll support that team to ensure that design is delivered as per the Building Requirement Specifications.

Your projects may include new buildings and retrofits. Your projects will be a variety of template-based and designed-from-scratch.

Key job responsibilities
- Drive standardization, communication, documentation, and adoption of core design and process elements using strong process management and Lean principles.
- Identify innovations and perform experiments to identify root causes of "defects" in performance through deep dive data analysis and decomposition and process observation.
- Own post-launch site visits, reviews and customer feedback, and incorporate feedback into future project plans.
- Collaborate with counterparts in other functional areas as required in support of network initiatives.
- Work autonomously in an ambiguous environment, seeking to understand business problems.
- Partner with teams across the business and beyond to source, allocate, and coordinate resources.
- Partner with customers, internal/external teams, and engineering teams to determine what projects move forward and in what priority order.
- Oversee gaps between teams, processes and systems, helping teams reduce exposure to classic failure modes (e.g., requirements not sufficiently understood or documented, ineffective cross-team collaboration, long-term impact(s) from third-party solutions, security not considered, insufficient stakeholder review, etc.).
- Develop, implement, and govern KPI reporting for a portfolio of programs, providing visibility to the milestones, and performance across all projects.

A day in the life
You will act as the Single Threaded Leader (STL) and be the primary engineering and design resource for external/central teams. You will attend relevant WBRs, MBRs, CAR and Site meetings and support with relevant content as needed. You will support white papers on each project, outlining the business case with financial justification.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate with internal AMXL teams to improve the business. You will actively seek out discrepancies to identify gaps in information and resolve by addressing the root cause. Up to 20% travel required.

About the team
We own the Design solutions for the AMXL E2E network including Cross Docks (IXD), Fulfillment Centers (FC), Sort Centers (SC) and Delivery Stations (DS). The role drives strategic capacity and design initiatives to remove end-to-end supply chain bottlenecks, leads the entire design lifecycle from concept to execution, iterates through continuous improvements, and leads engineering for building launches and retrofits. We develop complex Building Requirements Specifications (BRS) with design concepts to meet the long-term customer demand requirements. Additionally, we drive standardization and documentation of core design elements, own post-launch reviews, and own capacity management for the end-to-end network.
