The primary role of the Controls Engineer is to design and program the motion control systems that power Amazon's packaging machinery and automation. This includes deep knowledge of HMI, PLC, motion control, and integration of safety/ancillary systems. The Controls Engineer works closely with the Electrical and Mechanical teams to ensure the control systems meet project objectives.
Key job responsibilities
- Collaborate with the project team to design the systems architecture
- Design the systems architecture including the HMI, PLC, Motion, safety, and ancillary systems at the project / platform level while ensuring the technical, cost and timeline objectives are achieved
- Ensure complete and scalable project documentation
- Support the safety certification process
- Participate in meetings to optimize for customer experience, supply chain, and sustainability
About the team
The Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging (MSP) team develops automated solutions and sustainable packaging across Amazon's operations, focusing on customer experience and waste reduction.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in automating, deploying, and supporting large-scale infrastructure
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
- Experience with Linux/Unix
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes
- Bachelors Degree in Automation, Controls, or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
- Proven experience in advanced motion control platforms (HMI, PLC, Motion, Safety) integrated design and programing
- 3+ years experience with motion control software (Rockwell, Rexroth, Beckhoff, B&R, Siemens)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with distributed systems at scale
- Safety certification experience (CE, UL, CSA, TUV)
- Experience with integration of Nordson, Valco, Robatech or other industrial hotmelt application systems
- Experience with integration of advanced visions systems (Keyence or similar), labeling and other ancillary device integration
- Codesys programming experience
